Many new parents are shocked to find out that their newborn won’t sleep…at all. In fact, it’s common for infants to wake every few hours to eat-their body is growing and developing at a rapid rate and they need fuel.

Sleep When Your Baby Sleeps

I’m sure that you’ve already been told to “sleep when the baby sleeps,” but that isn’t always possible. Instead, consider choosing one of your baby’s naps and resting during that period. Trust me when I say that the dishes and laundry will wait.

Day/Night Confusion Is Very Real

Your baby doesn’t know night from day-and they certainly don’t know that they’re supposed to sleep at night. When they were in your belly there were lights and noises, and they slept. So of course your new baby is sleeping right through the vacuum cleaner and your screaming toddler.

But at night, when it’s quiet, you may notice your baby waking up more. To help remedy this, utilize a white noise machine, like those made by MarPac. Additionally, be sure to expose your baby to lots of natural daylight.

At night, make sure that there is very little, if no light to encourage a restful environment.

Swaddle Like A Pro

Your baby spent 9 months snuggled inside you, and likely, stretching out isn’t terribly relaxing. It may actually be contributing to their wakings. If you haven’t already, learn to swaddle like a pro to help recreate the womb experience. Gentle Baby Solutions has some great swaddling tips that will help you learn how to swaddle your baby safely (and wean the swaddle when you’re ready).
4 Essential Tips For New Parents

Be Realistic

Don’t expect that your 3 month old baby is going to sleep through the night next week-because likely, they won’t, but that doesn’t mean you can’t encourage longer stretches and better sleep habits starting now.

Dealing with a newborn waking all day and all night can be exhausting and frustrating. There are gentle sleep shaping techniques that you can employ from the very first week, which we’ve included in Gentle Baby Solutions so that you can get a head start on good sleep habits.

Why can’t I sleep train my 2 month old?

We know you are eager to get your baby sleeping through the night, and so were we when we had young babies. The reality is that your newborn baby really isn’t ready to begin sleep coaching or sleep training until around 4 months of age, and sometimes, not until 6 months.

This is why we’ve provided developmentally appropriate sleep shaping tips each week that will help you to encourage your baby’s good sleep habits and sleep associations during the first 6 months-so that hopefully, your baby will be sleeping through the night soon.

My name is Kim West, and I’m the mother of two beautiful girls, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has been a practicing child and family therapist for more than 21 years, and the creator of the original gentle, proven method to get a good night’s sleep for you and your child. My sleep journey began when I started experimenting with gently shaping my daughter’s sleep by not following the conventional wisdom at the time. After having success (and then more success with my second daughter!), I began helping family and friends and my step-by-step method spread like wildfire, exactly like an excellent night of sleep for a tired parent should!
